As a teacher of students with disabilities, you must learn the art of being direct, firm, but kind. You must be careful not to push the boundaries in emergency situations and other stressful situations. You also need to be able to keep yourself calm and self-assured. It is important to be able cope with the inevitable self-doubt associated with working with students who have disabilities.

Coursework

Special education courses prepare teachers to work with students with disabilities. This course covers topics like assessing students with disabilities, instructional service, behavior interventions, as well as the transition from school into independent living. It also covers evidence-based methods and approaches to teaching students with disabilities. Students will be able to learn about state and federal mandates as well as inclusive classrooms and collaborative delivery of service models. Additionally, the course will cover multicultural issues and research-based practices, as well as professional practice in special education.

Special education teachers are responsible for developing Individualized Education Programs, monitoring student progress, and communicating effectively with parents, administrators, and other professionals. They must also be able to work with students with disabilities such as autism, learning disabilities, or other special needs.

Outlook for the Job

While there is a good job outlook for special education teachers across the country, it can be difficult to find the right job. The South and West will have the highest demand for special education teachers. Next, rural areas and inner-city schools will be the next to increase. Teachers of children with multiple disabilities, including speech and language impairments, have the best job prospects. There is also a growing demand for bilingual teachers.

Demand for teachers of special education is expected to increase in the next decade, though at a lower rate than the general workforce. In recent years, however, special education students have been declining in number. This will change as more people are diagnosed learning disabled and government legislation puts emphasis on disability employment.

Certification requirements

Different states have different requirements for special education teachers. In some cases, candidates must pass a subject-area-specific test in addition to having completed a state-approved teacher preparation program. If they have done an internship in special education, teachers can add a special education teaching licence to their current license.

Special education teachers need to be well-versed in federal law that covers IEP rights for students with disabilities. They must also know how to collaborate with parents and general education teachers to create IEPs that are inclusive of students with disabilities. They need to be updated on IEP standards, and they must know how students are assessed against these goals.
