It is not a MOOC

The term MOOC has been used to describe a massive open online course, or MOOC. It is often misleading. Despite the widespread hype about MOOCs there are important differences between them, and traditional online courses. MOOCs offer many advantages over traditional online courses, such as their design and research approach. The following are three key differences between MOOCs and conventional online courses. If you can't answer either of these questions, it's probably not a MOOC.

It is not part in the AllLearn consortium

While it may surprise you to hear that Yale isn’t part of AllLearr, the truth is that Yale has a long track record of developing educational materials. Yale was the first school to launch an online course, and since then it has been a pioneer of this kind of online education. Yale, however, disbanded AllLearn in 2006 and started its own project called OpenCourseWare. This allows anyone to access thousands free online curricula.

It is not available for Rwandans

Both educators and students at both institutions are welcome to enroll in Open Yale Courses. These courses are not available in Rwanda. Open courses are offered for free and are offered through accredited educational institutions or nonprofit professional training programs. Rwandan students may also be able to study, work, or do research there. This program was formerly known under the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The Yale School of the Environment will take its place in July 2020.

FAQ

What's the point of education or schooling?

Education should prepare students for work. Education is more than a academic pursuit. It's a social activity that allows children to learn from one another and gains confidence through participation in arts, music, and sports. It is all about teaching students how to think critically, and how to create so they can be independent and self-reliant. What does it entail to have high educational standards?

Education standards that ensure all students reach their full potential are good. They establish clear goals for teachers to work towards with their students. Education standards that are flexible enough to allow schools to adapt to changing needs can be a good thing. A fair and equitable educational system must ensure that all children have equal chances of success no matter their background.

Should I be a specialist or branch out in one area?

Many students choose to concentrate on one subject (e.g. English History and Math) rather that branching into several subjects. But, you don't always have to specialize. For example, if you're considering becoming a physician, you could choose to specialize in either internal medicine or surgery. You can also choose to be a general practitioner, specializing either in pediatrics or family practice, psychiatry, gerontology, or neurology. If you're considering a business career, you could concentrate on marketing, management, finance, human resources, operations research, or sales. It's your choice.

Who can homeschool?

Anyone can homeschool. There aren't any requirements.

High school graduates can still teach their children. Many families decide to teach their grandchildren while they are still in high school.

Parents with less formal education can learn how to teach their children.

After completing certain requirements, parents can become teachers certified. These requirements differ from one state.

Some states require all homeschooled students to complete a test before graduation. Others do not.

Homeschooling parents should register their family at the local school district.

This involves filling out paperwork that is then submitted to the school board.

After registration, parents can enroll their children at public or private schools.

Some states permit parents to homeschool their children without having them registered with the government.

If you are a resident of one of these countries, you will have to ensure your children adhere to the state's compulsory attendance requirements.

What exactly is a school of trade?

For those who have not been able to get a degree at traditional higher education institutions, trade schools offer an alternative route. They offer career-focused programs which prepare students to pursue specific careers. Students enrolling in these programs typically complete two years of coursework in a single semester and then enter into a paid apprenticeship program where they learn a job skill set and receive on-the-job training. Trade schools can be classified as vocational schools or technical colleges. Some trade schools offer associate degrees.
